What is Open SDV Platform, and how will it change SDV service development for automakers?

May 28th, 2025

Thanks to open source software, OEMs and service developers are able to collaborate around SDV service development in new, innovative ways. How will that change SDV service development for automakers, and how can WirelessCar’s Open SDV Platform facilitate and deepen open source collaboration?

What is Open SDV Platform?

Open SDV Platform is a WirelessCar solution unit through which we offer both open source features (not brand-differentiating) and enterprise features (proprietary and often customizable).

This open platform enables us to support our customers on several levels:

Platform distribution
WirelessCar can be the distributor of the open source platform. That includes the provision of – and responsibility for – service-level agreements (SLA), Software as a Service (SaaS), and/or operations (including from third parties).

Add-on modules/solutions
We build and provide value-adding enterprise solutions. Software development tooling can be used to more seamlessly integrate the OEM’s development environment with our Open SDV Platform. We offer scaling, to ensure that developers’ solutions can go from a laboratory environment to fleets of connected vehicles.

Services
There is also the ability to buy managed services: open source or enterprise. The development and integrations of these services can be customized.

Open SDV Platform provides all the capabilities required to both connect a car and handle the standard integration between the car and the cloud. This includes the synchronization of data between the car, the cloud environment and – for example – customers’ cell phones. The platform also enables over-the-air software updates.

What does Open SDV Platform offer?

These are the key parts of our Open SDV Platform offer:

  • Open Core
    - The complete, deployable Open SDV Platform
    - Suitable for concept phases, evaluation, development
  • Support and lifecycle management
    - Support for the entire software stack
    - Monitoring of common vulnerabilities and exposures, bugs, and new versions
    - Active participation in development communities
  • Open development services
    - Development of open source components for and/or with the customer
    - Optional, time-limited exclusivity
  • Managed services
    - Operations of services on the OEM’s infrastructure of choice
  • Enterprise development services
    - Development of closed source components for customers
  • Enterprise add-ons
    - Additional add-ons (as mentioned above)

Additional features of Open SDV Platform

One component that is already available to our customers is WirelessCar’s Digital Key Management solution. In the future, we should expect all cars to have digital keys. The ability to manage car access via one’s phone or the cloud is a central part of our Open SDV Platform.

Software as a Service (SaaS) and Professional Services are two additional offerings.

Software as a Service means that WirelessCar takes full responsibility for the deployment and maintenance of the platform, for the benefit of the OEM. We ensure 24-7 operation, regardless of whether it is proprietary or open source software.

Professional Services is a consulting service where WirelessCar offers expertise that customers pay for per unit of time. If an automaker wants additional functionality in their platform, one that is not currently on our roadmap, they can then either wait for us to develop it, or pay to have us develop it immediately.

Who is Open SDV Platform for?

Open SDV Platform is intended to serve three distinct customer groups:

- Vehicle OEMs
- Vehicle owners and users
- Third party service providers

The key customers we have in mind within the OEM organizations are primarily the R&D departments – developers and business stakeholders.

However, WirelessCar is also actively seeking collaboration partners, as we pursue an exploratory way of working around open source innovation. At the time of writing, we are exploring the possibility of working primarily with European and North American partners on (1.) concept projects for platform co-creation, and (2.) development projects for our Software as a Service products.

What issues does Open SDV Platform help solve?

These are some of the issues faced by OEMs that Open SDV Platform addresses and aims to solve:

  • Initial and continuous configuration of vehicle connectivity.
  • Onboard application management, based on vehicle capabilities and user eligibility.
  • End-to-end (cloud to edge) monitoring of application/container health.
  • Vehicle data and function access management; “who can access what and when?”
  • Data management in the cloud, including data governance, cleaning, and labeling.
  • Traditional telematics services, such as remote door unlock or remote vehicle dashboard.
  • Ensuring that data, via a digital triplet, is bi-directionally synchronized and appropriately up to date in the vehicle, the cloud, and personal devices.
  • Providing an exceptional developer experience (DX) for the OEM developers.
  • Providing operating system packaging (Android, Linux) for the in-vehicle control units.

Open source collaboration brings OEMs and service developers closer together

The automotive industry is inevitably moving towards more open collaboration and shared development. In terms of SDV service development, greater collaboration is simply a prerequisite for continued innovation and profitability. Shared platform work will save time and costs, which OEMs can then use to differentiate and strengthen their brands.

An expression that sums it up well is: “Don’t fight gravity.” The sooner automakers embrace open source collaboration, the more they will shape the automotive landscape to come.

Our Open SDV Platform is a prime example of this, as it will result in even closer collaboration between us and the OEMs. WirelessCar’s developers will work side by side with the customer’s developers, using the platform and exploring new SDV services and functions together.

This has not been a common work method in the past, and that is partly the point here. By creating joint teams working in extensive open source collaboration, we are able to streamline SDV service development and adapt solutions for our customers in new ways.
