WirelessCar turns 25

February 20th, 2024

Do you remember what the worlds of software and automotive looked like back in 1999? The promise of new technological advancements brought exciting opportunities to shape the services and solutions that would transform how we get around. For the past 25 years, we’ve embraced this promise and harnessed the power of digitalization, connectivity, and innovation to empower future mobility.

Join us in exploring our history, acknowledging how far we’ve come, and learn what drives us as we navigate the next 25 years and beyond.

The Early Years

In 1999, WirelessCar was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden as a joint venture by Ericsson, Volvo and Telia. Our mandate was to develop and market complete solutions for mobile e-services to vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators. By adapting to new communication systems and rapid technological developments, we played a pivotal role in developing the first telematics services for Volvo Cars, including Volvo On Call. Volvo became the third brand in the world to offer these kinds of services, and the first outside North America. Since then, WirelessCar has collaborated with Volvo and many of the world's major OEMs to provide comprehensive connected car solutions.
