Sustainability at WirelessCar

We believe in the freedom to move, and the benefits of getting around. We believe in the enormous potential of technology and digitalization to meet the challenges of the global transportation sector. We believe that cars have an important role to play, and we believe that making it possible for everyone to move in a safe, sustainable, smart and democratic way is key to a thriving future. This is our approach.

The context we operate in

The transportation industry is facing many sustainability challenges, including pollution and high demands on land, energy and water. It is also the fastest growing source of GHG emissions worldwide. It accounts for 17 % of global greenhouse gas emissions - behind only the energy sector. Of this, 41% of emissions come from passenger cars. There are now more people on the move than ever before, and each year that figure is increasing thanks to a growing population and a growing globalized economy.

To reduce those emissions, an increasing number of car makers have set goals for zero-emission production, usage, and end-of-life for their cars. Car data and its increasing quality and quantity, however, is a largely untapped resource.

Connected car data, a fuel for sustainable mobility

Connected car data has great potential to speed up decarbonization of the emissions from passenger cars. It is the new fuel that is not only supports a GHG free value chain, but also the behavioural changes and digitalized business models needed to support this shift. Congestion, pollution and use of resources will be improved as well. WirelessCar has the vision, technology, user focus, and business know-how to realize this potential.

GHG Emissions

Our own GHG footprint

Since 2020, we have measured our value-chain emissions according to the GHG Protocol. Our main emissions for 2021 occur in scope 3 and originate mainly from purchased goods and services (office and building materials, IT hardware and data storage services) as well as employee commuting. Our scope 1 and 2 emissions account for 15 % and comes mainly from purchased energy.

Compared to 2020, the total emissions have decreased by 11 %, where the scope 1 and 2 emissions have increased by 8 % while scope 3 emissions have decreased by 13 %. Due to our business growth, the specific emissions per employee, revenue and connected vehicle have decreased by 21-35 %.

How have we calculated?
The emissions are calculated based on both activity data and spend data. When data is missing, relevant assumptions are made to fill in the data gaps. A major correction for Use of Sold Products has been made, concluding in more specific bottom-up data, resulting in more accurate results. Contact us if you would like a more detailed description of the calculation methodology.

The road forward

We aim to reach climate neutrality by 2040 and have developed a roadmap to take us there that is in line with the Science-Based Targets framework and the targets of our customers and partners. This roadmap includes working with energy efficiency in all scopes (from offices to operations), with our business travels and commute, our hardware, and more.

We also prioritize our contribution to our customers and end users in decreasing emissions and digitalizing their offers. We do this by providing and developing digital services for energy and climate efficient mobility. These are some of the areas where we see that our offers can contribute:

Sustainable by design

What about the energy that digital car services consume? As this is an increasing figure, it is important to address. By embracing a sustainable by design approach, we, together with our partners, strive to run our services on green energy and to build digital services that minimize energy consumption without jeopardizing their quality. As a result, we can decrease the climate impact of connected cars.
